Synastry house overlays: where your partner lands in your life

Aspects show how two people's planets talk to each other. House overlays show where in your life that conversation happens. Here is how to read them without overthinking.

The idea behind house overlays

Picture your birth chart as a house with twelve rooms: a front door (1st house), a kitchen table where money is counted (2nd), a playroom (5th), a bedroom with the lights low (8th), and so on. In synastry, you take your partner's planets and set them down inside your rooms. Their Venus might end up in your playroom. Their Saturn might sit at your kitchen table. That placement is a house overlay.

The overlay tells you which area of your life the other person "activates." Someone whose Sun lands in your 10th house may make you feel more ambitious and visible. Someone whose Moon lands in your 4th may feel like home within weeks. And because overlays go both ways, you are landing in their rooms at the same time, often in completely different ones.

That asymmetry is part of the fun. One partner might experience the relationship as a grand romance (5th house) while the other experiences it as a steadying daily partnership (6th or 7th). Neither view is wrong. Overlays simply explain why two people can describe the same relationship so differently.

Which planets matter most

Not every overlay carries the same weight. Personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) feel the most immediate because they describe everyday needs and desires. A partner's Venus in your 5th house is something you notice on the third date. Their Neptune in your 5th is subtler, and since Neptune stays in one sign for over a decade, you will share that overlay with many people their age.

How to read overlays wisely

House overlays are seductive because they are easy to list. A few habits keep them in perspective:

  1. Look at both directions. Always check where you fall in their chart too. The story lives in the combination.
  2. Start with aspects. Aspects between planets (conjunctions, trines, squares) describe the core chemistry. Overlays add the setting. A great overlay with tense aspects reads differently from a modest overlay with flowing ones.
  3. Mind the cusps. A planet two degrees from a house line may feel like it belongs in the next house. Many astrologers give it a few degrees of leeway.
  4. Check the birth times. Overlays need both people's exact birth times. A difference of an hour can move a planet into a different house.
  5. No house is "bad." A 12th house overlay can feel confusing, yet it often brings deep compassion. A 6th house overlay may look unglamorous and still create a beautifully reliable partnership.

What our tool does (and doesn't) calculate

We want to be upfront: our free tool does not compute houses or house overlays. It calculates both people's planets from the Sun to Pluto, the rising sign when you add birth time and place, and the synastry aspects between your planets up to Saturn, plus a compatibility score. That aspect grid is the foundation most astrologers read first, and you can see it in our synastry chart.

The rising sign is a useful bridge. Because it marks the start of your 1st house, knowing both rising signs gives you a rough sense of how your houses line up. Our guide to rising sign compatibility explains what that pairing alone can tell you, and the rising sign calculator finds yours. To see full overlays, you can enter both charts into any astrology program that draws a bi-wheel.

If one of you does not know your birth time, do not worry. Signs and aspects still say a lot, as our guide to an unknown birth time explains.

Beyond overlays

Overlays describe where you meet. A composite chart describes the relationship as its own entity, and your Venus, Mars and Moon signs describe what each of you needs. Put together, they make a layered portrait. Treat it as a conversation starter: "Apparently you light up my 9th house, which is why every trip with you feels like a revelation." That is the spirit of overlays at their best.

Frequently asked questions

What are house overlays in synastry?

House overlays show which of your houses your partner's planets fall into, and vice versa. They describe which area of life each person activates for the other, such as romance in the 5th house or commitment in the 7th.

Which house overlays are best for romance?

The 5th (romance and fun), 7th (partnership) and 8th (intimacy and trust) houses are the classic romantic overlays, especially with a partner's Sun, Moon, Venus or Mars. Other houses can be just as meaningful in different ways.

Do I need a birth time for house overlays?

Yes. Houses depend on exact birth time and place, so overlays need both people's birth times. Without them, you can still read planetary signs and the aspects between charts.

Are house overlays more important than aspects?

Most astrologers read aspects first, because they describe the core chemistry between two people. Overlays add context about where in life that chemistry plays out.
