Your descendant sign: who you attract and why

Your rising sign is the face you show the world. Directly across from it sits your descendant, the qualities you go looking for in other people. Here is how to find it and read it.

What the descendant is

At the moment you were born, one sign was rising over the eastern horizon: that is your Ascendant, or rising sign. At the very same moment, the opposite sign was setting in the west. That setting point is your Descendant. It forms the cusp (starting line) of your 7th house, the house of partnership.

Because the two are always exactly opposite, they work as an axis. The Ascendant describes "me": how you come across, your instinctive style. The Descendant describes "you": the people you are drawn to, the traits you admire, and sometimes the traits you have not quite claimed in yourself yet. Many astrologers see the descendant as a mirror. What fascinates you in a partner often points to something you are learning to develop.

How to find your descendant sign

If you know your rising sign, you already know your descendant: it is always the sign directly opposite.

The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so you need your birth time and place. Our rising sign calculator works it out in your browser; flip it to the opposite sign and you have your descendant. If you do not know your birth time, our guide to an unknown birth time covers what you can still read.

The twelve descendant signs in love

Aries descendant (Libra rising). You come across as gracious and accommodating, yet you fall for bold, direct people who say what they want. A partner who takes the lead now and then helps you find your own fire.

Taurus descendant (Scorpio rising). Intense on the surface, you crave calm, sensual, steady partners. Someone who makes you feel safe enough to soften is magnetic to you.

Gemini descendant (Sagittarius rising). You love big ideas, but you are drawn to quick, curious minds who notice details and keep the conversation sparkling.

Cancer descendant (Capricorn rising). You look composed and capable. Privately you long for warmth, a partner who cooks you soup and asks how you really are.

Leo descendant (Aquarius rising). Cool and independent at first glance, you are dazzled by expressive, generous people who wear their hearts proudly. They teach you that being seen is not a weakness.

Virgo descendant (Pisces rising). Dreamy and empathetic yourself, you appreciate grounded partners who show love through practical help and gentle honesty.

Libra descendant (Aries rising). You charge ahead, and you are charmed by diplomatic, elegant people who bring balance. Libra is Venus-ruled, so harmony and beauty matter in your relationships more than you might admit.

Scorpio descendant (Taurus rising). You seem easygoing, yet you want depth: a partner with emotional intensity, loyalty and a little mystery.

Sagittarius descendant (Gemini rising). Clever and social, you are drawn to adventurous, philosophical partners who widen your horizons and make life feel like a trip.

Capricorn descendant (Cancer rising). Caring and protective, you seek mature, reliable partners who have a plan. Someone steady lets you relax into your softness.

Aquarius descendant (Leo rising). Warm and expressive, you fall for original, independent people who value friendship and do not need constant reassurance.

Pisces descendant (Virgo rising). Organized and thoughtful, you melt for imaginative, compassionate souls who remind you that not everything has to be fixed.

Descendant patterns and growth edges

Ever noticed you keep dating the same "type"? The descendant often explains it. The pattern is not a curse; it is information. When you notice yourself drawn to someone, try asking: what quality here do I admire, and could I grow a little of it myself? The healthiest relationships under this axis are ones where both people learn from each other rather than one person carrying all of a trait.

The opposite-sign dynamic also explains why opposites can attract so strongly. Read our guide to opposite signs for how that tension can become balance, or explore a classic pairing like Aries and Libra.

The descendant in synastry

When a partner's planet sits on your descendant, it tends to feel as if they were tailor-made for you. Their Sun there can feel like "the one I always pictured"; their Venus there brings easy affection and attraction. Because the descendant and ascendant are one axis, a planet on your descendant also opposes your ascendant, so there can be a push-pull quality that keeps things interesting.

Our free tool calculates your rising signs (with birth times and places) and the aspects between both people's planets up to Saturn, but it does not compute houses or contacts to the descendant itself. You can still spot these links yourself: if their Venus is in the sign opposite your rising sign, take a look. For close relatives of this idea, see Venus conjunct Ascendant and rising sign compatibility, then compare your full charts in a synastry chart.

Frequently asked questions

What does my descendant sign mean?

Your descendant is the sign opposite your rising sign and the start of your 7th house. It describes the qualities you are drawn to in partners and close relationships, often traits you are learning to develop in yourself.

How do I find my descendant sign?

Find your rising sign using your birth date, time and place, then take the opposite sign. For example, Aries rising always has a Libra descendant, and Cancer rising has a Capricorn descendant.

Is the descendant the same as the 7th house?

The descendant is the cusp, or starting point, of the 7th house. The sign on it sets the tone for how you approach partnership, while planets inside the 7th house add more detail.

Do I always attract my descendant sign?

Not literally. You may not date people with that Sun sign, but you often notice that sign's qualities in the people you fall for. It describes a type of energy, not a rule.
