The 7th house in astrology: partnership, commitment and your type
Your 7th house is the part of your chart that faces other people. It describes the partners you are drawn to, how you commit and what you are learning through one-on-one relationships.

What the 7th house is
A birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each one an area of life. The first house begins at your Ascendant and is about you: your body, your style, your approach. The 7th house sits directly opposite it, starting at the Descendant, the point that was setting on the western horizon when you were born. If the first house is "me," the 7th is "you," and more precisely, "you and me."
Traditionally it is the house of marriage, committed partnership and open contracts, but also of open enemies, which sounds dramatic until you realize it simply means anyone you face directly. Business partners, best friends you treat as equals, the ex you still argue with in your head: all 7th house material. It describes the qualities we seek in others, often because they balance something we have not yet developed in ourselves.
How to find your 7th house sign
The quickest way: find your rising sign, then count to the opposite sign. In the whole sign house system, the sign opposite your Ascendant is your 7th house. In other systems such as Placidus the cusp degree can shift, but the Descendant is always exactly opposite the Ascendant, so the sign on the 7th house cusp matches.
You need a birth time for this, since the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours. Our rising sign calculator finds your Ascendant from your birth date, time and place; the opposite sign is your Descendant. For a deeper look at that single point, read our guide to your descendant sign.
The 7th house through the six axes
Because the 7th house mirrors the 1st, it is easiest to read in pairs. Each axis shows a balance you are learning to strike through relationships:
- Aries rising, Libra 7th. You lead with independence and are drawn to diplomatic, graceful partners who teach you to share decisions. Venus rules your 7th, so harmony and beauty in love matter a great deal.
- Taurus rising, Scorpio 7th. Steady and sensual yourself, you are pulled toward intensity and depth. Partnership asks you to let someone see beneath the calm surface.
- Gemini rising, Sagittarius 7th. Curious and quick, you fall for people with big beliefs and wide horizons. Jupiter rules your 7th: partners often expand your world.
- Cancer rising, Capricorn 7th. Protective and tender, you value partners who are reliable and grounded. Saturn rules this 7th, so commitment tends to deepen with time rather than arrive overnight.
- Leo rising, Aquarius 7th. Warm and expressive, you are drawn to original, slightly unpredictable people who value friendship inside love.
- Virgo rising, Pisces 7th. Practical and observant, you seek compassion, imagination and a little magic in a partner, and you learn to soften your inner critic.
The other six risings simply reverse these pairs: Libra rising has an Aries 7th, Scorpio rising a Taurus 7th, and so on. A Libra rising, for instance, often admires bold, direct partners who make decisions easily. If the dance of opposites fascinates you, see our guide to opposite signs.
The 7th house ruler
The planet that rules your 7th house sign is your "partnership ruler," and where it sits in your chart adds detail. If you have a Gemini 7th, Mercury is the ruler; Mercury in your 10th house could suggest meeting partners through work or valuing a partner who supports your ambitions. If you have a Cancer 7th, look at your Moon: its sign shows the emotional tone you want in commitment.
Planets in the 7th house
Not everyone has planets here, and an empty 7th house does not mean an empty love life. It just means the house is read through its sign and ruler. When planets do live here, they add color:
- Sun in the 7th: relationships feel central to your sense of self. You shine brightest in partnership.
- Moon in the 7th: you need emotional closeness with a partner to feel at home, and may be very attuned to their moods.
- Venus in the 7th: a classic placement for charm and a love of partnership. People enjoy your company and you value fairness in love.
- Mars in the 7th: attraction to strong, direct people, and relationships with a bit of friction and lots of energy. Healthy debate is part of your intimacy.
- Saturn in the 7th: you take commitment seriously and may prefer to wait for the right person. Relationships often get better with age.
- Jupiter in the 7th: generous, growth-oriented partnerships and a tendency to find partners who broaden your life.
The 7th house in synastry and composites
In synastry, astrologers look at where one person's planets fall in the other's houses. When your partner's Sun, Moon or Venus lands in your 7th house, they can feel like "partner material" almost instantly. That technique is called a house overlay; our guide to house overlays walks through it.
The composite chart has a 7th house too, describing how the couple partners as a unit. Read more in our composite chart guide.
What our tool can show you
To be clear, our free tool does not calculate houses or house overlays. It does calculate your rising sign (with birth time and place), which gives you your 7th house sign by simple counting, plus all planets from the Sun to Pluto and the synastry aspects between two people's planets up to Saturn. Try the synastry chart with a partner, and use the rising sign compatibility guide to see how your Ascendant and Descendant interact with theirs.
Frequently asked questions
What does the 7th house represent in astrology?
The 7th house represents committed partnerships, marriage, close one-on-one relationships and contracts. It also describes the qualities you look for in others, often traits that balance your own Ascendant.
How do I know my 7th house sign?
Find your rising sign, which requires your birth time and place, then take the opposite sign. For example, Cancer rising has a Capricorn 7th house and Leo rising has an Aquarius 7th house.
What if I have no planets in my 7th house?
An empty 7th house is very common and does not mean a lack of love. You read it through the sign on its cusp and the planet that rules that sign, which shows your partnership style.
Which planets are good in the 7th house?
Venus and Jupiter are traditionally seen as easy and generous there, but every planet has gifts. Saturn brings loyalty, Mars brings passion and honesty, the Moon brings emotional depth.
