Venus retrograde in love: exes, old feelings and new clarity
Every year and a half or so, the planet of love seems to walk backward for about six weeks. It is less a curse than a pause button: a season for looking at what you value, who you miss and why.

What Venus retrograde actually is
No planet really reverses. Venus retrograde is an optical effect: Venus orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does, and when it swings around to pass between us and the Sun, it appears from our vantage point to slide backward against the stars. In the middle of the retrograde, Venus meets the Sun in what astronomers call an inferior conjunction, then reappears as the morning star after weeks of shining in the evening sky.
The rhythm is steady and rare. Venus turns retrograde roughly every 19 months and stays that way for about 40 to 43 days, which makes it the least frequent retrograde of the personal planets. Compare that with Mercury, which does it three or four times a year (our Mercury retrograde guide covers that one). Because it is uncommon, astrologers treat it as a meaningful chapter rather than background noise.
A current example: in autumn 2026 Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio in early October and backs into Libra before turning direct in mid-November. That is a telling route. Scorpio is a sign where Venus is in detriment, drawn into intensity, jealousy and depth, while Libra is one of the two signs Venus rules, all about balance, fairness and partnership. Picture a season that starts by digging up what hurts and ends by asking what is fair.
The love themes it stirs up
Venus governs attraction, affection, pleasure, money and what you find beautiful. When it appears to retrace its steps, those themes get retraced too. A few patterns people notice again and again:
- The ex text. Someone from your past likes a photo from 2019, or sends a "hey, thought of you" at midnight. The classic Venus retrograde scene.
- Nostalgia with a filter. You remember the good parts of an old relationship more vividly than the reasons it ended.
- Values on review. A relationship that felt fine suddenly raises questions: Do we want the same life? Am I giving more than I get?
- Taste shifts. The type you always chased feels less interesting, or you find yourself drawn to someone you would have overlooked a year ago.
- Self-worth homework. Because Venus also speaks to how you value yourself, old insecurities can rise to the surface to be looked at kindly.
None of these are commands. They are invitations to notice. An ex resurfacing does not mean you are meant to get back together; it may simply give you the closure you never got.
If you are single, dating or in a relationship
Single and dating
Traditional advice says not to start a new romance under Venus retrograde. A gentler reading: new connections that begin now often carry a reflective quality. You might meet someone who reminds you of a past love, or a relationship might begin as a reunion with someone you already know. Go ahead and date, just keep your eyes open and let things unfold slowly. The first weeks after Venus turns direct are a good moment to check in with how you really feel.
In a relationship
Couples often find old disagreements returning for one more round. That can feel discouraging, but it is also a chance to finally resolve them. Try revisiting something that once delighted you both: the first restaurant you went to, the playlist from your first road trip. Venus retrograde loves a callback. If bigger questions surface, talk about them without rushing to decisions. Treat the period as a review, not a verdict.
Thinking about a big step
Many astrologers suggest waiting on weddings, cosmetic makeovers or big purchases for beauty and luxury until Venus is direct. That is a tradition, not a rule. If your date is set, a retrograde wedding can be framed beautifully as a renewal of something with deep roots. Astrology offers a lens; your life and your logistics still lead.
Born with Venus retrograde
Around 7 percent of people are born while Venus is retrograde. If you are one of them, love may have always felt a bit more inward for you. People with natal Venus retrograde often take longer to know what they want, question the romantic scripts they were handed, and develop very personal, sometimes unconventional, tastes. Many are late bloomers in love and wiser for it.
The gift here is authenticity. Once you figure out what you value, you rarely compromise it to fit in. Your growth edge is letting partners in on that private process instead of expecting them to guess. Your Venus sign still describes your love style; the retrograde only adds that reflective undertone. You can find your Venus sign with the Venus sign calculator, then read what it means in our Venus sign compatibility guide.
How to move through it gracefully
- Ask why before you reply. If an ex reaches out, notice what you are actually missing: the person, or a feeling from that time in your life.
- Revisit, do not relapse. Journaling about a past relationship can bring the clarity a late-night reunion would only blur.
- Audit your values. Write down three things you need in love and three you give freely. Check whether your current relationship, or your dating pattern, honors them.
- Rekindle on purpose. In a couple, plan a "remember when" date. Nostalgia shared on purpose is sweeter than nostalgia that ambushes you.
- Be gentle with your self-image. Skip the dramatic haircut decision made at 2 a.m. and treat yourself to rest, beauty and pleasure instead.
Looking at two charts, not just the sky
A retrograde touches everyone, but it lands differently depending on your birth chart and your partner's. In the 2026 retrograde, for example, people with planets in Scorpio or Libra feel the review more personally. If either of you has Venus or Mars in those signs, our guides on Venus in Scorpio and Venus in Libra add context.
For the bigger picture, our free synastry chart compares your planets with your partner's, from the Sun out to Pluto, and lists the aspects between you up to Saturn along with a compatibility score. It is a lovely retrograde project: less about predicting what happens next and more about understanding why you two fit the way you do.

Many people notice old flames resurfacing, and astrologers link this to Venus retracing its steps. It is a theme, not a guarantee. If an ex does reach out, use it as a chance to reflect on what you truly miss before deciding anything.
Is it bad to start a relationship during Venus retrograde?
Not necessarily. Tradition advises caution, but relationships that begin now often have a reflective or reunion-like quality. Take your time, and check in with your feelings again once Venus turns direct.
